Summertime almost always brings children home to hang at the family homestead. College students who can’t afford to rent are stuck trying to adjust to the mamma’s rules that they have not been accustomed to using during their 10 month stay away. Add in younger siblings and it’s cause for chaos during the first few weeks of summer. Once everyone is adjusted, unfortunately, the college student returns to the campus and yet another period of transition ensues.
What is a family to do? It’s important for everyone to remain adaptable to this change. When tempers begin to flare, take the necessary deep breaths to calm the emotions and change the mindset. Once the situation is diffused, sit down and discuss better ways to deal with the pressure of the new lifestyle and ways in which everyone can survive the summer. Win-Win discussions become key in making this an opportunity to stay connected with your burgeoning adult child and keep order in your household.
